Blackheads, Pimples, Whiteheads And Other Blemishes - What Are They?
If you've ever wondered why nature cursed you with a troublesome complexion, then you've no doubt spent time wondering exactly how certain complexion problems such as blackheads find their way into our skin in the first place and which is the best way to remove blackheads from your skin. Well, the first thing to note straight away is this - blackheads, pimples or whiteheads are not a result of poor hygeine. This is a myth, an unhelpful myth too as it causes people to focus on the wrong thing when attempting to tackle the problem.
Blackheads are caused when the skin's pores become blocked. Normally, the pores are open, allowing sweat to pass through to the skin's surface. Day-to-day dirt and grime can block the pores. Once the pore is blocked, oils that protect the skin become impacted behind the blockage, leading to a build up. This is a blackhead. The black head itself is the accumulation of dirt that hasn't been able to leave the skin's surface naturally. A pimple is when a blackhead or blocked pore becomes inflamed and tender. A whitehead is when a blocked pore becomes infected.
Blackheads are unsightly and everyone wants to find the best way to remove blackheads. But what is the best technique to rid blackheads from the skin?
An Easy Way To Remove Blackheads
If you think about it, the cause of blackheads is quite simple - blocked pores. So it stands to reason that the solution is simple too. Think of blackhead removal as a two step process. The first step is to open the pore, the second step is to clean it and get rid of the dirt and grime. Blackhead prevention comes later.
So, how do we open the pore? Easy, use a hot flannel, steam, hot bath or any method that causes you to sweat. When you're sweating, your pores open up nice and wide.
Opening the pore is the easy bit. Removing the blackhead is the hard bit. The most successful method I've found when trying to remove blackheads is to use an adhesive strip that quite literally lifts the blackhead out of from the pore. These strips are available in most chemists and supermarkets under various brand names. Once the pore is open, apply the strip to the affected area (typically the nose) and leave the strip to dry into the skin. Once dry, you simply peel away the strip and watch the blackheads remove themselves from your skin.
The strips used to remove blackheads typically have an anti-septic solution impregnated into them, to help the user avoid any infection. There are expensive products and less expensive products, but in my honest opinion, it is generally better to go for the more expensive product. I don't normally say this, but I have found the slightly more costly adhesive strips to be more effective.
There is another easy way to remove blackheads, but it takes longer and requires more effort, but the upside is it has a longer lasting effect. Using an alcohol free cleanser and an abrasive flannel or cloth, simply clean the affected area once a day, preferably at night after all of the impurities have reached your skin. It will take longer to take hold, but the regular cleaning and application of warm water will gradually, over time, clear up the complexion. It sounds simplistic to say 'clean the area in question' doesn't it? But it is the regularity, temperature of the water, quality of the cleanser and texture of the cloth that are all important.
Cleaning with luke warm water and a bar of soap won't work. You need a good regime of using hot water (as hot as you can tolerate) a good quality cleaner containing no alcohol and as many natural ingredients as possible (as opposed to chemicals) to firmly clean the area.
Keeping Blackheads Away
The second method of removing blackheads is also an effective practice for ensuring they don't return. Once they've gone, you need to ensure that your skin is kept clean, the pores free from congestion and the surface free from impurities.
Going for a steam once a week is a good way to give the pores some irrigation. Do this the day after your most 'polluted' day. By this I mean, if there is a day of the week where your skin really gets treated badly, for example Saturday night out on the town, or Wednesday afternoon trip into the city, then plan for the day after to be the day when you purge your pores of all impurity.
Another bit of best practice is avoid the temptation to pick or squeeze at any trouble areas. No matter how good your beauty regime, one or two blackheads may sneak back. When this happens, don't just pick at them or attempt to squeeze them out, you must repeat the process that got rid of them in the first place, then resume your regular regime for keeping them at bay.
Feed Your Skin
Drinking plenty of water and eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables is a great way to ensure the complexion you've always dreamed of comes more easily. What you put in your mouth shows on the outside as well as on the waistline. Don't let yourself down by putting bad fuels into your engine. Nuts, fish and wheatgerm are great for the skin - you can't have enough of these.
Rest
Your skin, especially around the face, is the first place to show up a lack of sleep. Getting plenty of rest and eating the right food is half the battle to keeping your skin looking great. In fact, if you make sure diet and rest are taken care of, you may never need to remove blackheads again.
